Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) Allows Additional Deductions for Cash Donations to Charities[1][2]

By: April Banerjee, PWDF Executive Director, and Steven Bruce, PWDF Legal Director

The CARES Act allows taxpayers to deduct more of their cash donations to charitable organizations this year. For individuals who itemize deductions, the 60% limit on deductions for cash donations has been eliminated and gifts of up to 100% of the individual’s adjusted gross income (AGI) for 2020 will be deductible. Individuals who take the standard deduction will be able to deduct up to $300.00 of cash donations to charitable organizations for taxable years beginning in 2020.[3]

The limit on deductions for cash donations from corporate taxpayers has been increased as well, from 10% of a corporation’s taxable income to 25%.  These increased limits do not apply to donations to donor-advised funds.  See the CARES Act for more details and their application to specific taxpayers.
